THE PLIGHT OF INDIAN WOMEN  

There are several clear indicators of the fact that Indian women continue to be discriminated against: the sex ratio is skewed against them; maternal mortality is the second-highest in the world; more than 40 per cent of women are illiterate; and crimes against women are on the rise.

Problems for Indian women begin at birth. Even today boys are considered more desirable than girls in some families, because they offer parents security in old age as the parents traditionally live with the oldest son. Girls are often seen as a burden because of the dowry that must be supplied at their wedding and when married they leave the family. Indian newspapers frequently report stories of female babies being killed, or women committing suicide because they have not produced a son.

COMPASSION2ACTION

In order to make the women self-reliant, NLW desires to launch vocational training in tailoring, embroidery, typing etc. organized by the local church.

With the ability to generate an income, these women will have a new found dignity and status in the community, along with the security of knowing that they can provide for themselves and their children. Above all these women will receive the good news of Jesus Christ. Every day Bible study and prayer will be conducted by the pastor or his wife before training is given.

THE STRATEGY

During our church planters Institutes the vision for such ministry will be imparted to the leaders who will thereafter volunteer to set up a vocational training centre as part of their church planting strategy.

The church building/community centre or a shop rented may be used for training the deserving ladies who are victims of social injustice or physically handicapped.

While the church planter and his wife will provide key overseeing and spiritual guidance, a qualified tailor will be hired to teach from Mon – Fri for six months.

During the training, the church planter will begin each day with prayer and bible study followed by training.

These ladies would become disciples of Jesus Christ during their tenure of training and further become evangelists in their own respective market field.

Upon completion of the training, at a special graduation ceremony, in the presence of local political and village heads these ladies would be given a certificate, a Bible and a sewing machine to begin their career as a tailor.

The income generated would then go towards meeting her needs, family needs and tithe to the local church where she received the training.

Each centre will admit a maximum of ten ladies into each session. Thus, in a year one church planter would have trained and released 20 young ladies into self-worth, self-support and destiny.

Benefits to Church Planting:

The Church planter will receive credibility and acceptance from local villagers and political leaders for the contribution he is making for the social upliftment of the depraved women and avoid being persecuted.

The Local church will be well on its way to becoming truly indigenous through the tithe and support of the income generated by the graduates.

Those who are doing well in their career could further train other deserving ladies in their communities and neighborhood villages, whereby they could multiply the process of giving hope and eternity to others.

New doors will be opened up for the church planter to witness and establish relationships.
